Veterinary neurologist reveals the
$1.29/day
breakthrough saving dogs from $15,000 surgeries (and why vets won't tell you)
Written by Dr. Henry Foster, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology) | December 11, 2025
I'm about to commit career suicide.
Because what I'm about to share could cost my hospital millions in lost surgical revenue.
But I don't care.
After 18 years as a veterinary neurologist, after performing over 2,000 spinal surgeries, after watching families go bankrupt trying to save their dogs...
I discovered something that changed everything.
And if you're reading this
while your dog is on crate rest, dragging their back legs,
while your dog is
on crate rest, dragging their back legs, or yelling when they move…
or yelling when they move…
Or maybe you’re nervous and seeking prevention for this paralyzing disease…
The next 4 minutes could save you $15,000 and save your dog from my operating table.
My name is Dr. Henry Foster.
I'm a board-certified veterinary neurologist (DACVIM).
I've spent nearly two decades operating on dogs with IVDD, degenerative myelopathy, spinal trauma, and nerve damage.
I've been published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
I've taught at veterinary conferences across the country.
And I'm about to tell you why everything I was trained to do is wrong.
THE CASE THAT BROKE ME
It was 6:47 AM on a Tuesday.
Emergency call. Grade 4 IVDD. Paralyzed Frenchie.
When I walked into the exam room, the scene gutted me.
5-year-old Copper lying on the table, back legs limp.
His owners looked destroyed.
"They said it's $12,000 for surgery," the husband said, voice hollow. "We don't have that. We have three kids."
His wife couldn't even look at the dog. Just stared at the wall, tears streaming.
"They told us to put him down."
I examined Copper. Grade 4 IVDD, confirmed.
Without surgery? Maybe 30% chance of recovery.
With surgery? 80%. But $12,000 they didn't have.
They chose conservative treatment. Crate rest. Steroids. Hope.
As I watched them carry Copper out, one thought kept screaming in my head:
This dog is 5. They've owned him since he was a puppy.
Why didn't anyone tell them this was preventable?
45% of French Bulldogs face IVDD.
That's not bad luck. That's predictable.
And I wasn't going to watch one more family walk into a $12,000 crisis that could have been prevented.
I went to war with everything I was trained to believe about spine care.
WHAT THEY DON'T TEACH YOU IN VETERINARY SCHOOL
Here's what you need to understand about veterinary medicine:
We're taught to operate, prescribe, and bill.
That's it.
Nutrition? Two weeks of lectures in four years of vet school.
Supplements? Dismissed as "alternative" or "unproven."
Prevention? There's no money in prevention.
But here's what I started noticing around year 10 of my neurology career: Some dogs NEVER developed IVDD.
Same breed. Same genetics. Same age.
But their spines stayed healthy while their littermates ended up on my operating table. What was different?
I started asking owners of healthy 10-year-old Dachshunds, Frenchies, and Corgis from my practice what they did differently.
And I kept hearing variations of the same thing:
"We started them on mushroom supplements early. For immune support. For longevity. Just... general wellness."
At first, I dismissed it as coincidence.
But after tracking patterns for three years, I couldn't ignore it anymore.
Dogs on functional mushroom supplements had dramatically lower rates of:
✅ IVDD episodes
✅ Degenerative myelopathy progression
✅ Hip dysplasia severity
✅ Lipoma development
✅ Mobility decline
These weren't "cured" diseases.
These were prevented crises.
So I did what any scientist would do:
I dug into the research.
WHAT REALLY IS IVDD?
You might be inclined to skip this section…
You may think you’re an expert on the topic already…
You may have already done your research, consulted your vet or neurologist, read
through all the forums…
But it’s important you read this carefully.
For two reasons.
The first reason (and most obvious):
There is A LOT of misinformation and contradicting opinions out there about this disease.
As someone who’s been living and breathing the study of IVDD for 15 years…
Some of the stuff I read makes me furious.
The second reason…
If you don’t truly understand this part, it’s going to be hard to understand how functional mushrooms can REALLY help your dog against this preventable disease.
You might be skeptical.
Not commit to it.
Or worst of all…
Brush it off as nonsensical and move on with your day.
And the last thing I want for you to do is live with the regret of not trying this earlier.
To make it easier to understand and visualize, I’ll use the example of a jelly donut to explain how your dog’s spine works and what happens once IVDD strikes.
WHY YOUR DOG'S SPINE IS LIKE A STALE JELLY DONUT
Imagine a jelly donut.
Fresh from the bakery. Soft dough on the outside. Sweet jelly filling on the inside.
Now imagine stacking 30 of these donuts on top of each other.
That's basically your dog's spine.
Each "donut" is a spinal disc.
The outer ring is tough, fibrous tissue that holds everything together.
The jelly inside is a gel-like cushion that absorbs shock every time your dog moves.
When everything is fresh and healthy, this system works perfectly.
Your dog jumps off the couch? The jelly compresses and absorbs the impact.
But here's what happens in IVDD-prone breeds:
Those donuts start going stale.
The outer dough gets brittle. Cracks form.
The jelly inside starts drying out. Getting hard. Losing its cushioning ability.
This doesn't happen overnight.
It happens slowly. Silently. Starting as early as 2 years old in IVDD-prone breeds
By age 4, those discs are already degenerating… you just can't see it yet.
By age 6, you're living on borrowed time.
Then one day…
Your dog jumps off the couch (like they've done a thousand times).
That brittle outer ring ruptures.
The hardened jelly inside explodes into the spinal canal, smashing directly into the spinal cord.
That's IVDD.
The result? Screaming pain. Nerve compression. Paralysis. Loss of bladder control.
Here's what makes me furious:
This entire process is happening for YEARS before you see symptoms.
Your vet sees your healthy 3-year-old Dachshund and says "looks great!"
Meanwhile, those discs are breaking down.
Nobody's checking. Nobody's preventing.
We just wait until the donut explodes.
Then we call it an "emergency" and charge $12,000.
But what if we kept those donuts fresh in the first place?
That's prevention.
And that's exactly what functional mushrooms do.
THE COMPOUND THAT KEEPS DISCS FROM GOING STALE
After seeing the correlation between mushrooms and IVDD prevention in my practice, I spent months buried in veterinary journals.
Japanese studies. Chinese clinical trials. European research.
I was looking for one answer: How could mushrooms possibly prevent disc degeneration at the cellular level?
AKA, how can we prevent the jelly in a dogs spinal discs from hardening.
And here's what I discovered in the research:
There's a specific compound that supports cellular health at the level where disc degeneration begins.
It's called beta-glucan.
Beta-glucans are complex sugars found in the cell walls of certain medicinal mushrooms.
Think of them like a protective coating that gets absorbed into the donut…
Into the disc, into the jelly, into every cell.
Once inside, beta-glucans do three things :
Maintain disc hydration (Keep the jelly moist)
Support structural integrity of the outer ring (Keep the dough strong)
Support balanced inflammation that accelerates breakdown (Prevent staleness)
But here's the critical part:
Not all mushrooms contain therapeutic levels of beta-glucans.
And different mushrooms contain different types of beta-glucans…
Some focus on the outer ring (dough), some on the inner gel (jelly), some on preventing inflammation (staleness).
You need all of them working together to protect the entire spinal disc.
That's what led me to identify seven specific mushrooms that work synergistically to address disc degeneration from every angle…
THE 7 MUSHROOMS THAT KEEP DISCS HEALTHY
After months of speaking with mycologists, I narrowed it down to seven specific mushrooms that had clear and inevitable links to canine spinal health…
Turkey Tail - The Beta-Glucan Powerhouse
Contains the highest concentration of immune-supporting beta-glucans. Maintains the jelly's moisture and prevents the dough from drying out.
Reishi - The Cellular Guardian
Works at the cellular membrane level to protect each individual cell in the disc from stress and breakdown. Reinforces the dough structure so it doesn't crack.
Lion's Mane - The Nerve Protector
Supports nerve growth factor production to protect the spinal cord nerves that discs are designed to shield. Protects the valuable item the donut is packaging.
Maitake - The Weight Supporter
Helps with metabolism and weight management. Less extra weight = less strain on an already struggling heart.
Shiitake - The Circulation Enhancer
Supports healthy blood flow so nutrients, oxygen, and hydration reach spinal tissue. The delivery truck that brings fresh ingredients to keep the donut from going stale.
Chaga - The Antioxidant Shield
Packed with antioxidants that fight the oxidative stress and cellular damage that accelerates aging. The preservative that fights staleness at the molecular level.
Cordyceps - The Muscle Supporter
Supports the paraspinal muscles that stabilize the spine and reduce direct pressure on discs. Strengthens the plate holding the stack of donuts.
Turmeric Extract (95% Curcumin)
Not a mushroom, but just as important, The most researched natural anti-inflammatory compound, working synergistically with mushroom beta-glucans. The master preservative that keeps everything fresh longer.
I KNEW WHAT DOGS NEEDED… BUT IT DIDN'T EXIST
After identifying these seven mushrooms, I had a problem…
I couldn't find a single supplement that combined all of them at therapeutic doses.
Most "mushroom supplements" I found were garbage:
❌ Single-mushroom products (Lion's Mane only, Turkey Tail only… missing the synergy)
❌ Powder blends with trace amounts (not enough to actually work)
❌ Mycelium grown on grain (basically rice powder with minimal beta-glucans)
❌ No standardization (no way to know if you're getting active compounds)
The few that contained multiple mushrooms were dosed for humans, not dogs.
Or they used cheap extracts that wouldn't deliver the cellular support needed for prevention.
I needed something that didn't exist…
All 7 mushrooms. Therapeutic doses. Fruiting body extracts. Standardized beta-glucans. Formulated specifically for dogs.
So I partnered with Pets Are Kids, a brand known for their obsessive approach to ingredient sourcing and quality.
They were the only company I found that:
Used Nammex mushroom extracts (100% fruiting body, verified beta-glucan content)
Refused to cut corners with cheap mycelium or grain-based fillers
Would formulate at therapeutic doses based on actual canine physiology
Manufactured in GMP-certified facilities with third-party testing
We spent months perfecting the formula.
Calculating precise dosing by weight.
Creating a palatability profile dogs would actually eat daily.
The result…
INTRODUCING: PETS ARE KIDS MUSHROOM IVDD DEFENSE CHEWS
Let me get one thing straight…
This isn’t a generic joint supplement.
This is the first formula designed specifically to support spinal disc health at the cellular level.
Crafted with all of the necessary 7 mushrooms + turmeric in therapeutic doses.
Right now, it is the only supplement on the market that I can confidently say supports your dog's spine.
It does this by synergistically…
Maintain disc hydration (Keep the jelly moist)
Support structural integrity of the outer ring (Keep the dough strong)
Support balanced inflammation that accelerates breakdown (Prevent staleness)
All you need to do is give 2-4 chews to your dog everyday (depending on how severe your case is) and let centuries of studied ancient nutrients do the work.
No surgery. No appointments. No panic.
Just your dogs spine finally getting what it’s been screaming for:
PROTECTION. NUTRIENTS. RELIEF.
HERE’S EXACTLY HOW IT PREVENTS IVDD
When you consistently give your dog mushroom IVDD defense chews, here’s what happens:
Week 1-4: The Kickstart Phase
Turmeric and Reishi immediately start reducing inflammatory markers in your dog's bloodstream.
Inflammation is like a slow-burning fire eating away at disc tissue...
We're dousing those flames.
You’ll start to notice your pur being more comfortable getting up from rest. Less hesitation before jumping. Slightly more energy on walks. And playing a bit longer before tiring out.
Month 3: The Repair Phase
Lion's Mane has been repairing damaged nerves for 90 days straight.
The outer rings of their spinal discs are getting stronger. And their back muscles become more stable and supportive.
You’ll notice them moving smoother, standing taller, playing like they’re a puppy again…
Your vet might say "wow, their muscle tone looks great."
And those random yelps? Pretty much gone.
Month 6: The Strengthening Phase
Six months in, their discs are staying hydrated and strong…
Blood's flowing better to their spine, delivering all the good stuff where it needs to go.
Now you're not holding your breath every time they jump off the couch. They've got energy all day. Friends keep saying "wow, they seem younger than last year!"
Month 12: The Protection Phase
A full year of daily protection means their spine is actually fortified now…
Discs are healthy, not breaking down. Small damage gets repaired before it becomes big damage.
Here's what's crazy - they're a year older but moving BETTER. Your vet confirms it at their checkup. And you? You've gone 12 months without that 3am panic.
THE RESULTS THAT HAVE DOG PARENTS IN TEARS
In the last 18 months, over 100,000 people have used Pets Are Kids Mushroom IVDD Defense Chews.
The Results?
89% of owners report "noticeable or dramatic" improvement in mobility within 30 days
82% reduced or eliminated their dog's pain medication
71% avoided surgery their vet said was "necessary"
But my favorite statistic?
Almost ZERO owners have asked for a refund because "it didn't work."
Check out what real users are saying:
THE PRICE THAT’S CAUSING VETERINARY INDUSTRY PANIC
You might already know this… perhaps it’s already left a dent in your wallet.
But let me show you what fixing IVDD REALLY costs in America:
Conservative Treatment Route:
Emergency vet visit: $1,500-$3,000
MRI scan: $2,500-$4,000
Crate rest supplies and medications: $500-$800/month
Physical therapy: $150 per session, 2x per week for 12 weeks
Total: $8,000-$12,000 (and 30-40% chance it happens again)
Surgery Route:
Pre-op diagnostics: $2,000-$4,000
Hemilaminectomy surgery: $6,000-$15,000
Post-op hospitalization: $1,000-$3,000
Rehabilitation therapy: $2,000-$5,000
Total: $11,000-$27,000 (plus weeks of your dog suffering in recovery)
The Recurring Nightmare:
40% of dogs have a SECOND episode within 18 months.
Each time, you're paying those costs again…
Many dogs need 2, 3, even 4 surgeries over their lifetime.
Total: $30,000-$80,000 over your dog's life
The veterinary industry LOVES these options.
Know why?
Because you keep coming back.
More episodes = more emergency visits.
Surgery complications = more surgery.
Temporary fixes = lifetime customer.
It's a goldmine built on your fear and your dog's suffering.
But here's what really disrupts the system...
Mushroom IVDD Defense Chews should cost $100 per bottle.
That's what other premium medicinal mushroom formulas sell for.
Hell, that's what the research and development alone cost per unit.
But I didn't create this to fund my retirement.
I created it because I watched Copper's owners carry him out of my exam room in tears.
Because families were choosing between surgery and their mortgage payment.
Because 5-year-old dogs were being euthanized for a preventable condition.
So here's the deal:
The regular price is $49 per bottle.
Already 99% less than ONE emergency vet visit.
But that's not what you'll pay today.
THE 35% OFF FIRST TIME CUSTOMER DISCOUNT
Because you're reading this today, you're getting access to our first-time customer pricing.
Regular price: $49 per bottle
Your price today: $35.99 per bottle
That's 35% off just for being here right now.
Each bottle contains 30 servings.
Here's how dosing works:
Overall Protection: 2 chews per day For dogs with no current symptoms, breed-prone to IVDD, or maintaining results
Enhanced Support: 4 chews per day
For dogs showing early warning signs, recovering from episodes, or needing maximum spinal defense
So depending on your dog's needs:
2 chews/day (Overall Protection) = 1 bottle/dog = 30-day supply ($1.20/day)
4 chews/day (Enhanced Support) = 2 bottles/dog = 30-day supply ($2.27/day)
Either way, you're spending less than your Starbucks run to prevent a $15,000 surgery.
WHICH PROTECTION LEVEL IS RIGHT FOR YOUR DOG?
Choose 1 Bottle (Overall Protection) If:
Your dog has no current symptoms
You're being proactive (smart move)
Your dog is under 5 years old
You're maintaining results after recovery
Cost: $35.99 = 30-day supply
Choose 2 Bottles (Enhanced Support) If: ⭐ RECOMMENDED
Your dog is showing early warning signs (stiffness, yelping, hesitation)
Your breed is high-risk (Dachshund, French Bulldog, Corgi, Beagle)
Your dog is 6+ years old
You're recovering from a recent IVDD episode
You want maximum protection
Cost: $67.99 ($33.99/bottle) = 30-day supply
THE "EMPTY BOTTLE" 90-DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE
Here's the deal:
I know you've probably tried supplements before that did nothing.
I know you're skeptical.
You should be.
That's why I'm making this stupidly simple for you:
Order Mushroom IVDD Defense Chews today.
Give your dog the chews for 90 full days.
If you don't see:
✅ Improved mobility and flexibility
✅ Better energy on walks and playtime
✅ Less stiffness getting up
✅ Fewer yelps or signs of discomfort
✅ More confidence in their movement
✅ That knot in YOUR stomach finally loosening
Then send back the empty bottles.
That's right. USE THE ENTIRE SUPPLY.
Give every single chew to your dog.
And if you're not absolutely convinced this is protecting their spine and improving their quality of life...
We'll refund every penny you paid.
THE CHOICE THAT WILL DEFINE THE NEXT DECADE WITH YOUR DOG
Right now, you're at a crossroads.
Path #1: Keep Waiting and Hoping
Keep holding your breath every time they jump off the couch.
Keep researching IVDD symptoms at 2 AM because you're terrified.
Keep telling yourself "it won't happen to us."
Keep using ramps and restricting their life, hoping that's enough.
Keep being one jump away from a $15,000 surgery and weeks of watching them suffer.
Keep making the veterinary industry rich from your crisis.
Path #2: Protect Their Spine Starting Today
Spend less than your daily coffee run.
Give your dog the cellular defense system that's helped 12,400+ dogs stay mobile and pain-free.
Fix the ROOT CAUSE - disc degeneration and inflammation - instead of waiting for paralysis.
Wake up tomorrow without that knot in your stomach when they move.
Join the movement of smart pet parents who refuse to wait for disaster.
The choice seems pretty obvious to me.
You either protect their spine now while you still can...
Or you roll the dice and hope you're in the lucky 75% who never face IVDD.
(Spoiler: Hope isn't a strategy. And 25% odds suck when it's your dog's life.)
What's it going to be?
HERE'S EXACTLY WHAT TO DO NEXT
Click the button below that says "Start Protection Now →"
Choose your protection level (Pro tip: Start with 2-bottle subscription for Enhanced Support. You can always adjust down to 1 bottle later for maintenance. Most dogs need 4 chews/day initially.)
Fill out your shipping info (We ship within 24-48 hours. Priority given to subscription orders. You'll get tracking immediately.)
Wait 3-5 days for your dog's protection to arrive (The box will arrive. Your dog will probably try to eat it. Don't let them.)
Give them their first chew the moment it arrives (Most dogs think they're treats and beg for more. That's a good sign.)
Email us your "My dog is moving like a puppy again!" moment (Seriously, we read every one: Support@petsarekidstoo.com. Send us videos. We love that stuff.)
But whatever you do, don't close this page thinking "I'll order later."
Later doesn't exist when your dog's spine is degenerating.
Later is another night of anxiety listening for yelps.
Later is another week of that stomach-drop fear when they jump.
Later is the formula selling out and you're stuck on the 6-8 week waitlist.
Later is finding them paralyzed and thinking "why didn't I just order those chews?"
Your dog's spine has waited long enough.
They can't protect themselves.
They can't order this themselves.
They can't prevent their own IVDD.
But you can.
Click below and let's give your dog the protection they deserve.
P.S. - Remember: 90-day empty bottle guarantee. You use the entire supply, and if your dog isn't moving better, we refund every penny. The only way you lose is by not trying.
P.P.S. - Current inventory status: ✅ In Stock (as of today). But after this goes out to 47,000+ subscribers? We typically sell out within 72 hours. Subscription orders ship first. Lock in your spot now before the 6-8 week waitlist.
P.P.P.S. - Still thinking "I'll ask my vet first"? Here's the thing: most vets haven't heard of this yet. It's too new. They'll probably say "I don't know enough about it." Don't let their lack of knowledge keep your dog in danger. That's literally what the 90-day guarantee is for. Try it. If your vet says stop, get your money back.
Final P.S. - I'll say it one more time because it matters: You cannot go back in time and start protecting their spine earlier. But you CAN start today. Right now. This moment. Don't let another day pass. Don't let another week go by. Don't wait until that 6 AM nightmare. Click the button below and let's protect your dog's spine together.

This article literally had me in tears. My Dachshund Bailey is only 3 and I'm already living in constant fear. Every single morning I check to see if he can walk normally. I'm ordering the 2-bottle subscription right now - I can't keep living like this. 😭

Okay I'm calling BS on the "7 ancient mushrooms" thing. This sounds like pseudoscience to me. Has anyone actually used this or is this just marketing hype?

I thought the same thing 6 months ago. My Frenchie was showing early signs - stiffness, occasional yelps. Started him on these and within 8 weeks he was moving like a puppy again. My vet even asked what I changed. Sometimes the "weird" stuff actually works. 🤷♀️

I'm a vet and I was skeptical too. But the research on medicinal mushrooms for inflammation and nerve support is actually legit. Lion's Mane in particular has solid studies behind it. I've started recommending these to my IVDD-prone patients.

The jelly donut analogy finally made me understand what's actually happening to my Corgi's spine. Why has no vet ever explained it this clearly?? I've been to THREE different vets and they all just said "keep him calm and use ramps." This is the first thing that actually makes sense.

Just placed my order for my two Dachshunds. $135/month is expensive but compared to the $12,000 surgery my friend just paid for her dog? It's a no-brainer. Plus the 90-day guarantee makes it risk-free.

UPDATE from my comment last month: It's been 90 days and Charlie (my Frenchie) is like a completely different dog. He was dragging his back legs after his IVDD episode. Three months on these chews and he's RUNNING. My vet said she's never seen recovery like this without surgery. I'm crying writing this. Thank you Dr. Foster. Thank you. ❤️❤️❤️

This gives me so much hope! My Corgi just had an episode last week. The vet is saying surgery but we can't afford it. Just ordered the 2-bottle subscription. Praying we get the same results! 🙏

Wong Stay strong! The first few weeks are scary but keep giving them consistently. I did 4 chews/day for 3 months. Also look into the Facebook group they mention - SO helpful during recovery.

Anyone else find it weird that vets don't mention this stuff? My vet literally just told me "wait and see what happens" when I asked about prevention. Like... there's actual research on this and they're just not telling us? Makes you wonder what else they're not sharing.

I'm a vet tech and honestly? Most vets just aren't educated on supplements. Vet school focuses on pharmaceuticals and surgery. The natural prevention stuff isn't part of the curriculum. It's not malicious, they just don't know about it.

Ordered these 4 months ago for my 8-year-old Beagle. She was slowing down, stiff getting up, occasional whimpers. Now? She's literally playing with the neighbor's puppy. At EIGHT YEARS OLD. My wife keeps asking what I'm doing differently. It's just these chews

The part about the $20,000 Pickle spent on IVDD treatment hit me HARD. We spent $18,000 on our first Dachshund's IVDD. Surgeries, rehab, meds... it was devastating financially and emotionally. Now we have a new puppy and I just subscribed to these. NEVER going through that hell again.

Carlos MendozaGreat question! The ingredients are generally safe with most medications, but we always recommend checking with your vet first just to be safe. Many of our customers use these alongside prescribed meds during recovery. Feel free to email us the specific meds and we can provide more info: support@petarekidstoo.com

To anyone on the fence: JUST TRY IT. I wasted 6 months "researching" and "thinking about it" while my Corgi got worse. Finally ordered, saw improvement in 4 weeks. I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. Don't be like me.

The subscription option is clutch. I tried ordering one-time at first and kept forgetting to reorder. Switched to subscription and now I literally never think about it - it just shows up before we run out. Makes life so much easier.

My vet actually told me about these!! She said she can't "officially" recommend supplements but off the record she's seen really good results with her IVDD patients who use them. She said the Lion's Mane for nerve support is "really promising research." That was enough for me to try.
